Katechizm brzeski z lat 1553/1554 był teologicznym „bestsellerem” swoich czasów, mającym na celu szerzenie idei reformacji wśród zwykłych ludzi w przystępny sposób. Prawdopodobnie prace nad nim zostały zlecone przez księcia Mikołaja „Czarnego” Radziwiłła, wczesnego zwolennika reformacji w Polsce i na Litwie. Założył on w Brześciu drukarnię, w której publikował protestanckie teksty w języku polskim.
Katechizm sprytnie łączył formę Małego Katechizmu Marcina Lutra z niektórymi treściami czołowych reformatorów, takich jak Urbanus Rhegius. Katechizm został napisany prostym, przejrzystym językiem polskim, tak aby każda osoba posiadająca umiejętność czytania i pisania mogła go zrozumieć. Format pytań i odpowiedzi ułatwiał zapamiętywanie. Ten wciągający styl pomógł wyjaśnić główne nauki protestanckie dotyczące Prawa Bożego, Modlitwy Pańskiej, chrztu, Wieczerzy Pańskiej i tego, jak prowadzić chrześcijańskie życie.
Chociaż autor jest nieznany, Katechizm rezonował ze zwykłymi ludźmi poszukującymi zmian. Prawdopodobnie był to jeden z pierwszych strzałów w bitwie o serca i umysły podczas reformacji protestanckiej w Polsce i na Litwie.
